Magnetic Dreams has been creating digital content and animations for nearly 20 years, combining skills from various fields to help our clients bring their visions to life. Mike Halsey founded Magnetic Dreams nearly 20 years ago in Nashville, Tennessee. Don Culwell soon joined and would eventually become co-owner. We produce a wide variety of projects for commercial entertainment, film and video, and broadcast industries. We specialize in motion graphics, 3D animation, look refinement, compositing, and visual effects. Whether in 2D or 3D, our artists and directors mix digital techniques with traditional artistic approaches to handle the gamut from concept art to asset creation; animation and lighting; tracking and visual effects; compositing and editing.
Mike Halsey – President
Mike Halsey, Founder/President, spent his college years alternating between art classes and science courses. Graduating in 1981 he became the Director of Microbiology for an international laboratory, overseeing several dozen Microbiology departments worldwide. In 1988 Mike became a transplant coordinator as he learned the art of working under pressure racing to save lives against many odds. In 1990 Mike was asked to serve as Director of Tennessee Donor Services. He founded a tissue bank providing bone and tendons for transplant for the state of Tennessee and built the first class 10 clean-room in Tennessee for processing of organs and tissues. Mike continued to serve by co-drafting the National Transplant Act, and worked with the FDA in creating guidelines for the oversight of Transplant Programs nationwide. During this time Mike purchased an early computer and began experimenting with computer art and animation. By 1992 there was enough demand for his work that it was filling his nights and weekends. In the same year he founded Magnetic Dreams. Utilizing lower cost software and hardware, Mike quickly became a mentor to all in the animation community. Since that time Mike has continued to watch the technology closely, maintaining cost effective solutions and while discovering trends which prepare us for the future.
Don Culwell – Executive Vice President
By the time he was 16, Don was working to learn the art of 3D animation and FX. Founding Millennium Imaging in 1993, he quickly began to create broadcast art and animation. In 1994 Don and Mike merged companies. Through the years Don has provided the artistic vision behind Magnetic Dreams while managing the ever growing staff. In 2003 he launched an expansion effort by opening a satellite office in Austin, Texas. Don’s creative direction has won multiple Emmy awards and dozens of Tellies for Magnetic Dreams. His work includes projects for Big Idea, Sesame Street, EA games, Roy Orbison and many more.
